Start with borrowing costs
The Federal Reserve influences financial conditions partly through its policy rate. Changes can feed into other rates and affect the cost and availability of credit for households and businesses.
Follow the transmission
Easier financing can support spending and investment. Tighter financing can restrain them. These effects take time, and policy is only one of the forces shaping growth and inflation.
Listen beyond the headline
Our reading: a rate decision already anticipated by markets can matter less than the accompanying guidance. The central bank’s view of inflation, employment and future policy can change expectations even when the policy rate stays unchanged.
Avoid the automatic trade
“Rate cut means stocks rise” is too simple. A cut during a severe slowdown can communicate a very different economic picture from a cut after inflation cools. Always ask why policy changed and what had already been priced in.
